Overview

The X829 is a dual 2.5" SATA HDD expansion board focused on providing a bigger storage solution for your Raspberry Pi 4B. Its elegant and ultra-compact design allows two 2.5" HDD/SSD to be conveniently attached to Raspberry Pi 4. The board is a great way to give a desktop look, as you can connect two external hard drivers without having them "hanging" from the USB ports of your SBC.

Knowing that our users might need more USB entrances, we added to extra USB 3.1 Gen1 ports to the X829, so the user can connect keyboards, USB sticks or even other external HDDs.

If you are looking for building a Media Center or even a Network-attached storage (NAS), the X829 is the right board for it. You will be able to separate one hard disk only for operating system and the rest for media, games...etc.

Please refer to [X822] or [X828] if you need dual SATA board for raspberry pi 3.

Hello, i have pi4b + x829 + x708.

When i plug x829:upport -> with Usb3cable -> pi4:usb2 port, hdd is visible and detected. I have such (good) picture:

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ sudo lsusb Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub Bus 001 Device 008: ID 174c:0829 ASMedia Technology Inc. Bus 001 Device 007: ID 174c:0829 ASMedia Technology Inc. Bus 001 Device 006: ID 05e3:0610 Genesys Logic, Inc. 4-port hub Bus 001 Device 002: ID 2109:3431 VIA Labs, Inc. Hub Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

When i plug x829:upport -> width Usb3cable -> pi4:USB3 port then hdd is not detected, and picture is bad.

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ sudo lsusb Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub Bus 001 Device 002: ID 2109:3431 VIA Labs, Inc. Hub Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Both pi4:Usb3 ports are checked, and ok.

What can i do to solve it?

Oh, self answer:

It seems that my hdd needs more time to start, when plugged to usb3 port (geekworm, why?).

So i forced to give it more time to spin up.

Two steps to do it:

1. Set USB boot first, instead of SD (but usb is not bootable). So pi4 give it some power on start:

sudo -E rpi-eeprom-config --edit and set BOOT_ORDER=0xf14

2. Give it timeout to spin:

sudo vi /boot/config.txt

program_usb_boot_timeout=5 max_usb_current=1 program_usb_boot_mode=1

This works, but now system starts for a longer time. Is there a way to get things working not in a such tricky way?

Is it possible to use with X873 with usb cables instead and use to boot OS? Not worried about case, will make custom one. Just want to have faster applications and have hard drive just for storage.

Hello,

we have not tested x829 + raspberry pi 400 Keyboard; It can be used together in theory, you can test it if you have a x829 board.

But the x829 board has been discontinued, please refer to its upgraded version x883.

Hi, How to Avoid the USB3.0 and 2.4 GHz Devices Interference?

Lisa

Score 0++

Hello,

USB 3.0 devices might generate radio frequency interference that can cause Wi-Fi and other wireless devices operating in the 2.4GHz band to have issues communicating with your Raspberry Pi4. To avoid interference on the 2.4GHz band using Wi-Fi, try using the 5GHz band instead. If problem still exists, please turn off WiFi and use the wired network instead.

I saw that x829 needs >= 4A power in by DC jack.

But what is the max amper power out by the two xh2.54 pin ?

Can I power one more pi4B from the other xh2.54(without connecting to disk)?

Lisa

Hello,TIn theory it is possible. But the power requirements are stricter. cause if you supply power to two hard drives and two Raspberry Pis, more current is required.

Hello Geekworm,

I bought Order GEEKWORM-21-4685 consisting of Raspberry Pi 4 Model B+X829 Dual 2.5" SATA HDD/SSD Shield+Metal Case+X735 Power Management Board+DC 5V 4A Power Supply Kit × 1, Kit-2.

Shipment arrived fast and all parts fit nicely in the metal case.

I have however 2 questions: 1) I cannot get the RPI to boot from X829 when connected to USB3 port using the male/male USB cable provided in the set. If I use a USB2 port or add a cable extensor, then it will boot correctly. I'm using Ubuntu Server (or Desktop) 2.10. Is this a known issue? any eeprom settings I need to configure?

2) The X735 Power Management is not recognizing a system Shutdown (i.e. sudo shutdown) can keeps the case with power eventhough the system is not running anymore. Is this a known issue? any settings I need to configure?

Besides that, everything else seems to be working fine.

Looking forward to your reply.

Hello, 1) Please replace a USB3.0 cable to test through the USB3 port. and test whether the USB3 port of the RPI works normally.

I have bought a complete set containing the X829 and the UPS_U100_V12 on AliExpress in stead of the X708. The UPS_U100_V12 however does not fit on the raspberry pi because the spacers delivered with it are too long! Is it compatible anyway?

I use X829, X735 and Pi4. It has SSD 128GB and 2.5" 4TB HDD, and I connect 5V 5A SMPS power adapter to X735. When I copy large size file to 4TB HDD, Pi intermittently hang and no response, I have to do hard reset. Other experts suggestion is that maybe this problem is from insufficient power.

Can I use another power supply to connect X829 and disconnect power connector between X829 and X735, is it no problem?

Is there a way to shutdown the boards when the operating system also has already shut down?

Anonymous user #6

Regarding the poweroff issue, it turns out the operating system has to send some signals to the X735 via the GPIO at the end of its shutdown sequence. Some SystemD service should do the trick.

If you change the height of the spacers for HDD2, it should be able to support 15mm hard drives, you can test it. HDD1,you also need to consider the length of the usb cable
