embedded heatsink

Foreword

Why design this product?

  1. After the Raspberry Pi 4 was released, we found that the heat generation of Pi 4 also increased with its performance. We have encountered many times that Pi 4 crashed due to excessive heat generation. This problem can be satisfactorily solved by use the Raspberry Pi 4 armor case with other Pi 4 external expansion board.
  2. At the same time, we found that various types of Raspberry Pi 4 expansion boards such as DAC+, UPS HAT, or various LCDs on the market also encountered excessive heat generation when used on Pi 4. So we try to solve this problem.
  3. Inspired by Raspberry Pi 4 passive coolign armor case, we simplified the design, so there is the birth of this Embedded Armor Aluminum Alloy Heatsink / Radiator.

Why is it compatible with the pi 4 expansion boards?

  1. The P165(P165-A) Embedded Armor Aluminum Alloy Heatsink Radiator is 7mm high (designed with negative tolerance) and is equipped with M2.5*5+5 copper spacers; so the total height is 12mm, which can support most of Raspberry Pi 4 expansion boards(not support PoE expansion board); if you use expansion board with other height, you only need to replace the copper spacers with the right height. (If you need a special height copper spacers, please contact us.)
  2. The raspberry pi hat positioning hole has internal thread for easy fixing from above or below; Compared to the raspberry pi PCB, the entire heat sink shrinks inward by 0.5 mm.

Update History

  1. On November 11th, 2020, based on customer feedback, a slightly thicker version was released, which is 11mm thickness. It supports 3010 cooling fan, will have a better heat dissipation function and compatible with PoE expansion board. This new embedded heatsink is named P165-B, while the old radiator will be renamed P165-A from P165.
  2. On July 2020, update the cooling fan of P165 embedded radiator from 2506 to 2507.
  3. On April 10th, 2020, the P165 embedded heatsink has been updated to attach thermal tape at both CPU and RAM at April 2020, the first version just need to attach proper thermal tape at RAM.
  4. On September 29, 2019, Geekworm release this Raspberry Pi 4 Model B embedded aluminum heatsink to help slove Pi 4 excessive heat generation problem. This heatsink, which called P165, can also be used with a cooling fan above.

Features

  • Only supports Raspberry Pi 4 Model B;
  • Supports to cooling down the Raspberry Pi 4 board when using the Pi 4 expansion board;(Please choose P165-B if you need to use it with PoE board);
  • Equipped with a variety of screws and copper spacers;(The screw packs of P165-A1 and P165-B are different);
  • Raspberry Pi HAT positioning hole is M2.5 internal thread; (this design is convenient to fix);
  • Supports fan installation; Cooling fan can be added when the heat dissipation of a single aluminum heat sink is not enough;

I have purchased two of the P165-A's for my RPi4B's they worked perfectly for about three weeks, then the bearings on the fan failed and the fans make loud shriek/whine noises and turn much slower. :-(

I hope you plan on finding a better component vendor for future versions.

Hello,We will consider upgrading P165 to support Pi5. Now we have a pure copper heatsink,please refer to H502;

The P165-B cannot be installed on my Raspberry Pi 4 Model B because the block for the RAM is to thick even without the thermal pad. The heatsink sits on the RAM and wobbles in all directions

Hi, the P165-B is for the Raspberry Pi 4B, the one that comes with it has thermal pads that are just right for the CPU and RAM, I don't know what's wrong with it, can you provide us with some pictures please? Can send to email at support@geekworm.com (by the way provide your order number)

Hello, for P165-b What is the thread length of provided M2.5 screws?

And which standoff do you recommend for mounting HAT on top?

Hi,

  1. The thread length is 0.45mm for M2.5 screw.Basically, you can buy any M2.5, just pay attention to the length
  2. The standoff depend on the height of your hat.

There are holes drilled to mount a 25 mm fan. What type of screw should I use for those holes?

Hello, first of all, P165-B supports the installation of a 30 * 30mm fan using KM3 * 14mm screws

P165-A, supports the installation of 25 * 25mm fans, using PM2.5x10mm screws

Hi. I spreaded thermal grease evenly on processor, ram and usb chips. I see you put a lot of it! I have some trouble with wifi on Libreelec distro. In the same room as router it randomly loses connection. Is there interference with bluetooth?

Is it possible that the case blocks the wifi antenna and lose a bit of signal?

Hello, the metal casing may have a little impact on the WIFI signal, but it will not be very big, and the situation you mentioned should not happen

Is it possible to power the fan from the USB port? Could you publish the correct wiring?

Walker

Hello, it cannot be powered directly by USB. The interface of the fan is 2pin. It needs to be connected to the GPIO of the Raspberry Pi.

"Is it compatible with HiFiBerry Digi I/O and the HiFiBerry case?"

I have checked. Bought both boards - keeping P165-A and returning the P165-B.

P165-A is compatible with the board, the case needs a very small adjustment - one of the plastic parts that keep the board in place is conflicting with one of the corners of the radiator. The plastic needs to be cut a bit. Of course it's not possible to use the fan, so a passive cooling only. You earn about 10 C on average.

P165-B is to thick - it gets in the way with the S/PDIF connectors. It might work if just the part of the radiator that covers the ports were thinner by about 2 mm - the HiFiBerry board has protruding elements only in the connectors area. Pity that I couldn't use it, it would surely cool the Pi more.

P165-B is being sold in an antistatic bag that is sealed and has to be cut if one wants just to see if it fits, so I had to cut it...

Hi, We haven't tested it, but the HiFiBerry case may not support P165; Maybe you can use P165 without that case.

Hello,The x735 board has a PWM fan, which can meet the heat dissipation requirements of the Raspberry Pi, you don’t need to use 165-A if you choose x735

You specify that P165B supports POE and actually you can access to the four connectors for this purpose. But it is NOT compatible with "official POE hat" from raspberry. Simply there is no enough place for the components of this PoE hat. I wish I knew it before. Which PoE hat is compatible with P165B?

Hi there, 1. We test the P165-B heatsink with X765/ X760 PoE. And also use the PoE four connectors for test. X765: https://rasp...iki.com/X765 X760: https://rasp...iki.com/X760

2. Could you please kindly provide the detail date of the "official POE hat"? It is better to attached some pictures, and we will do some test. Thanks in advance.

I've just purchased the heatsink, there are two conductive pads, one blue (like the one reported on the pictures for the RAM) and the other black. Is the black one for the CPU?

Thanks

Hello sir, The black one is a gift, the blue one is enough, you can cut the blue one to match the RAM and CPU. best regards,
