Foreword

There are 5 version of X735: V3.0, V2.5, V2.1, V2.0, V1.0:

Version 3.0(Updated on Mar. , 2022):

Some new features of X735 v3.0:

  • Support width voltage DC 6V-30V input (only DC port), you still can use 5V PSU via type-c or micro usb port.
  • Remove the latching switch connector(the latching switches are no longer supported.), and add a XH2.54 5V OUT connector;
  • Replace the L-SW jumper with FAN FS jumper to control the PWM fan;

Because we found that there are some beginner who don't know how to install the script to make the PWM fan run, or the installation script doesn't support 3rd party OS, at this time, you just need to remove the FAN FS jumper, the PWM fan will run at full speed.

Some new features of X735 v2.5:

Version 2.5(Updated on Mar. 15th, 2021):

Some new features of X735 v2.5:

  • Use the silent PWM cooling fan, and support fan speed is control by script, support read fan speed, and we provide sample python code.
  • You must install shell script to enable the PWM fan work fine since it's a PWM fan, refer to X735 V2.5 Software
  • Support TRUE AUTO ON function (in the old version,the power management function is disabled if AUTO ON is enabled)
  • Considering that some customers use X735 together with other DAC shield, we adjusted the GPIO pins used.
  • Please install shell script to get safe shutdown function. please refer to X735 V2.5 Software
  • Remove the 2pin power cable from X735 v2.5
  • No any size changes.

FAQ

A: How to detect that the X735 v2.5 hardware is working fine?

Q: DON'T insert the X735 V2.5 into the Pi 4 board, only power the X735 v2.5 alone, then press the on-board switch, fan rotation means hardware is ok.

X735 V2.5 vs X735 V2.1

Version 2.1(Updated on Oct. 30th, 2019): Only change jumper 'FAN_HS' to 'AUTO ON' function; because we found 'AUTO ON' function is more useful to user.

Version 2.0(Updated on July, 30th, 2019): special update for raspberry pi 4 model B. Support all current models of the Raspberry Pi using a 40-pin header including pi 4 / 3B+/3B/2B/B+.

Add TYPE C power port for Raspberry pi 4 model B, and replace the 'select button' with L-SW jumper, add the another FAN_HS jumer to enable full speed fan. In fact, X735 v2.0 can have more performance.

Version 1.0:(Released on June, 24th) : designed for raspbery pi 3B+/3B/2B/B+

X735 V2.0 vs X735 V1.0

2.The X735 works seamlessly with the X825/ X883/ X828/ X829/ X857/ X862/ X832/ X835/ X872/ X820/ X850/ X830/ X860/ X870/ X852/ X822 to build your NAS storage center. At the same time, considering that you need a matching shell, we also design cases that can support X735.

At this point, you already have a mini linux working host.

Overview

The X735 is a multifunctional expansion board for all current models of the Raspberry Pi using a 40-pin header. It provides intelligent and safe power management, safe shutdown and full poweroff through software, an automatic temperature controlled fan which enables the use of the Raspberry Pi in extreme conditions including very high temperature environments. Since X735 V3.0 is wide voltage input, so we have some advise to X735 V3.0:

Different voltages have different rated currents. Generally speaking, the lower the voltage, the larger the required rated current. For example, when the voltage is 12V, the rated current of 2A is enough, if the voltage is 36V, 1A is enough, but if the voltage is 6V, the rated current should be more than 3A.

That is to say, the output power of the power adapter should be greater than the normal working power of the Raspberry Pi;

Generally speaking, we require the output power of the power adapter to be above 20W;

Some Tips

1. https://github.com/geekworm-com/x735-v2.5/issues/6

FAQ

1.How to use the Auto Power On jumper and Latching Switch Jumper on X735 V2.1 version board?

There two jumpers: Auto Power On jumper and Latching Switch Jumper on X735 board.

  • Auto Power On jumper

Short - Auto power-on when power applied

Open - Power on when power button pressed

  • Latching Switch Jumper

Short - Using external latching switch

Open - Using on-board power button or external external momentary switch

  • 1. When use X735 V2.1 with Geekworm X825-C2 Case, we equipped momentary switch in X825 metal case, please remove both of the jumper caps.
  • 2. As the auto power on function use latching switch, if you need to use auto power on function, please connect an external latching switch to X735 board or use X735 on board power button.

2. Which GPIOs are used in the X735 V2.1 script?

Answer: The GPIO4, GPIO17 and GPIO18 is used for power management. And the rest GPIO pins are available to use.

3.What if I connect the x820 XH2.54 5v to the IN of the X735, and then connect the power supply to the x820. Will the safe shutdown work?

Answer: This is no suggested, because power supply for X820 cannot be controlled by X735 and safe shutdown won't be implemented as well. You need to power from the X735 5V IN DC port.

4.Does the x735 power board work with the rock64 board? is the 40 pin connector compatible with the rock64 40 pin connector?

Answer: In fact, we didn't test X735 based with ROCK64, and we didn't consider ROCK64 board when we wrote a safe shutdown shell script, so we think X735 is not compatible with ROCK64. Also the PIN definiton of ROCK64 is different with Raspberry Pi. So it is not suggest to use X735 board with ROCK64.

5. What is the pinout for the PWR Switch?

Answer: Please refer to here: PH2.0 Conector Specification

6.Does the X725/X750 support to use with X735 together?

Answer: Please refer to Connecting the X725 UPS to the X735 Power Supply

7.Does the X735 V2.1 support to check the speed of the fan?

Answer: Sorry, no, X735 V2.1 is not support to check the fan speed by software, please refer to new version X735 V2.5.

8. Why my RPi4 will switched off directly after connected to the X735?

1. Please confirm all product connection is correct first. If you are not sure about the connection, please attach some pictures and contact us for help.

2. Please also do the following test and show us the result.

  • Remove X735 from the Raspberry Pi
  • Connect the power to X735
  • Press the blue button on X735. Does the blue LED light up? Does it turn off automatically?
  • Press and hold for more than 8 seconds, will the blue LED go out?

9.How to remove/unload the X735 script from your Pi?

A: Open the /etc/rc.local file (sudo nano /etc/rc.local or vim /etc/rc.local to open the /etc/rc.local file;), and seach x735, then comment out that line (add # on the begin of that line);

10. Can the x735 work in harmony with the x765 POE?

  • A: Yes, but the X735 must be set as "AUTO ON" mode.

11. Does this supply safe shutdown when power is cut? Or just safe shutdown when power is constant and a signal switch is cut

  • A: Sorry, no, the X735 does not support safe shutdown when power is cut. Please consider X728 if you need this function.

12. How to delete X735 script completely?

  • A:

(1)sudo nano /etc/rc.local , delete "x730pwr.sh", then save

(2)sudo rm /etc/x730pwr.sh

(3) sudo rm /usr/local/bin/x730shutdown.sh

13. Can I connect DC supply 5V and at the same time connect Powerbank to USBC input of X735 as a some kind of "UPS"?

  • A: No. It is not support to do so.

The POWERBANK output may not have a polarity protection circuit, and there is no path management for this connection.

14. After installing the script, the fan does not turn?

  • A: Please run the following command and tell us the result. Or upgrade the system to reinstall the test.

sudo python /home/pi/x735-v2.5/pwm_fan_control.py

"/Home/pi/x735-v2.5" indicates the path where pwn_fan_control.py is located.

15. Is there any way to check or verify if X735 is physically connected to the Raspberry Pi?

  • A: GPIO17=1, X735 connected, GPIO17=0 , X735 discontinued.

hello. i have the x735 v2.1 installed on a rpi 3b. I installed the appropriate x730 script from the github repo as per instructions for the v2.1 hat. everything works great for a few shutdowns/reboots but, and i have tried this five times now, after a few reboots the root fs becomes locked and im greeted with a notification that the fs is corrupt and has been locked by root and system becomes unbootable. currently im using it with out the script just fir the cooling fan but it would be great if i were able to actually use its power management functions. also this is while using raspian bullseye images.

May I cordially ask whether pressing the on-board 'blue power button' initiates the shutdown script in the same way as using a momentary switch plugged into JST PH 2.0mm?

Many thanks in advance. With kindest regards.

Hi,

on a Raspberry Pi 4 only the USB port that receives power is capable of acting as a USB Device. The other USB ports are capable only of acting as USB Hosts. To power the Raspberry and use USB type C at the same time, you have to buy a splitter. Using the x735 module it is possible to be able to use the raspberry type C as a device while the power supply goes into the type C of the x735? Thank you in advance.

For the RPi4, the software can also be installed under the operating system ubuntu-Mate-20.04.1 Beta2 64-bit from Paspberry.org for the Geekworm / Suptronics module X735 x730.sh the software can be installed functionally with a small trick. Some preparations are necessary for this: 1.) A full-upgrade of the system must be performed via the terminal. 2.) install wiringpi 3.) Install synaptic gpio-zero (to search under python3) 4.) In the root folder to open the directory /etc with administrator rights and create an empty file named rc.local. 5.) This file must be opened, subsequent lines entered and then saved the file.

  1. !/bin/sh –e
  2. rc.local
  3. This script is executed at the end of each multiuser runlevel.
  4. Make sure that the script will “exit 0“ on success or any other
  5. value on error.
  6. In ordert o enable or disable this script just change the execution
  7. bits.
  8. By default this script does nothing.
  1. Print the IP address

_IP=$(hostname –I) || true if [ “$_IP“ ]; then printf “My IP address is %s\n“ “$_IP“ fi

/etc/x730pwr.sh & exit 0 6.) Of course, you can save this file (with the same name) from an RPi4 with Rasbian_OS on which the x730 software is installed and running, search in the directory /etc of the root directory on a USB stick and save this file in the above root directory /etc of the ubuntu-Mate. 7.) In both variants, as an administrator, the access rights of this file must be controlled and adjusted (as owner e.B. not pi but karl-Karl Cuckoo (according to your administrator login account) with write and read right, group and other than root with read right). The file must be marked as executable. 8.) Run sudo apt-get update in the terminal. Only now can the installation of the x730 software as under http://raspb...dex.php/x735 or www.suptronics.com/miniPCkits/x730-software.html described. After starting x730off in the terminal, you will receive an error label, which can be ignored. Final measures: a.) On the desktop "Personal folder of ..." open the /etc directory as administrator twice and open the directory /etc in the root directory. b.) From x730pwr.sh create a link and place it in the administrator-free "Personal folder of ..." Drag. c.) The access rights of the files x730.sh and x730pwr.sh as above under 7.) check and adjust described. d.) Copy the file x730.sh to the directory /etc of the root directory opened with administrator rights (optional). e.) "Personal folder of ..." opened on the desktop click on the link x730pwr.sh twice with the left mouse button and click on the "Run in terminal" window in the window that appears. An error message is displayed that .....is already occupied. Therefore, the Momentary Switch function cannot be executed. Only the Latching power Switch function can be executed. d.) The system must be shut down via the taskbar menu and then the Momentary Switch button is pressed until the button LED goes out and the RPi4 is powerless. e.) Briefly press the Momentary Switch button (< 1 second). This turns on the supply voltage of the RPi4 and the RPi4 boots up to the login window. After entering the user password, the system boots up and the functions of the Momentary Switch can be checked: Press and Release >> RPi and X735 turn on Power LED stays on Press and hold for 1-2 seconds >> System rebooting Power LED Blinks rapidly Press and hold for 3-7 seconds >> System shutting down Power LED Blinks slowly Press and hold for > 8 seconds >> Force shutdown

Have successfully tested several times, both with the ubuntu-Mate versions Beta1 and Beta2.

I have the x735 v2.1 working on a Pi 4B running Buster. However it doesn’t work when I plug a HiFiBerry DAC + Pro due to conflicts with GPIO.

The Pi system just halts after the DAC kicks in from the script /etc/x730pwr.sh HiFiBerry states the GPIO18 the sound interface in hardwired on the Pi so it can’t be mapped onto another pin.

GPIO18 is only used for software shut down $ x730off that I’m not going to use Reference script /usr/local/bin/x730shutdown.sh

I have re mapped the GPIO4 and 17 in script /etc/x730pwr.sh and still no good so it must be down to the GPIO of the x735 being activated from the DAC!!

Question is has anybody else managed to get the x735 v2.1 working with a HiFiBerry DAC + Pro?

Or do I get another Power Management Unit? Or a different DAC?

Or dump the PM Unit idea altogether?

Before using the X735 v2.1 I plunged it into a working Pi4B. Using the momentary power button(external one and nothing so used the PCB button), no jumpers connected, no PSU connected to the Pi, it behaves like this:- 1 Pressing power button Pi powered up, fan and lights on X735 on Pi good. 2 Pressing the power button 1 to 2 secs nothing, no flashing LED's and no action. 3 Pressing the power button 3 to 4 secs all powered off Pi and X735 as if I had pulled the plug and no flashing LEDs

I don't need software power off so no need for x730.sh

Do I need to do something else to get it to work properly?

I bought two x828 boards and a x735 board for my raspberry pi 4 to connect two hard disks, a Samsung evo 860 (SSD) and a Seagate barracuda (HDD).

I've followed the instructions in the videos to assemble all boards with the raspberry and disks and everything works properly except when I want to reboot the system with the command: sudo reboot. The system shuts down but but it doesn't restart and I have to unplug the power adapter to reboot the system.

I've tried the raspberry only with x735 and works fine and reboot is ok. And i've also tried the raspberry with one of the x828 with any of the disks and works fine and reboot is ok. But when I combine the two boards the problem shows up. Seems like the problem is with Samsung disk because when i disconnect the x828 with this disk, the reboot works fine.

Anyone knows a solution?

ok. I have debugged this setup to this point. GPIO4 is the input from the x735 pertaining to the pressing and duration of the press for the power button. GPIO18 is the output from the Pi board to the x735 to power off. The problem I am seeing is with GPIO17's output. GPIO, in the script is labelled as "BOOT", but I am having an issue following the logic pertaining to the output. I can manually toggle it, and nothing happens. This is where I feel is the disconnect users are having with reboots. The shutdown script works ok, though in my configuration, I needed to ad more time to the delay. So, the question is, "What is the x735 supposed to do when GPIO17 from the RPi goes high?" Without a breakdown of the coding on the x735, it is hard to tell what the problem is.
